16-Day Bird Watching Adventure Safari in Rwanda

Upon your arrival in Kigali, a driver and birding guide will greet you and escort you to your hotel. After a briefing from your bird watching guide and trip manager, you'll embark on a birding excursion in Kigali. This will serve as your introduction to the local bird species in Rwanda. The best place to start birding in Kigali is Umusambi Village. This is the first wildlife sanctuary in the city, recently established to provide a safe haven for the endangered Grey-crowned Cranes rescued from captivity.

Umusambi Village boasts a variety of habitats, including a restored wetland, and is home to numerous bird species. As you explore the well-maintained trails, you'll have the chance to observe various avian creatures, such as the White-collared Oliveback, a notable species in this area. Additionally, you may see the Green-winged Pytilia, Lesser Honeyguide, Spot-flanked Barbet, Black-shouldered Nightjar, Purple-crested Turaco, African Firefinch, and more.

The park is unique with its savanna habitat that stands out in a predominantly mountainous country. Akagera National Park is recognized internationally as an Important Bird Area (IBA) and is home to over 525 bird species, which accounts for two-thirds of the bird species in Rwanda. The park offers a wide variety of savanna, woodland, and wetland bird species, and from the months of September to April, there are numerous Palearctic migrants.

As you travel to Akagera National Park, you will pass through cultivated areas and villages, providing opportunities for birdwatching along the way.

Once you arrive at the park, you can immediately begin your birdwatching activities. The Little Rush Warbler's enchanting calls will accompany you as you enter the park. You can document the bird species you encounter as you drive along the game circuits beyond the park entrance. The area near the entrance of Akagera National Park is characterized by acacia thickets, woodlands, grasslands, and wetlands. While bird-watching, you may also spot fascinating wildlife such as zebras, antelopes, monkeys, and even rhinos that inhabit this part of the park.

Later in the day, enjoy a peaceful sunset boat ride on Lake Ihema, the largest lake in Akagera. This picturesque experience will allow you to observe a variety of water-associated birds, including the African Jacana, Swamp Flycatcher, African Fish Eagle, as well as migrant species like Wood and Common Sandpipers. It should take around two hours to drive from your current location to Musanze, which serves as the entrance to Volcanoes National Park. Once you arrive in Musanze, immerse yourself in the area's stunning natural beauty and participate in birdwatching activities in Buhanga Forest. Although Buhanga Forest doesn't host any Albertine Rift endemics, you can still expect to see various other intriguing forest bird species. Take your time exploring the forest and savor the peacefulness of this alluring habitat.

Start your day with an early wake-up call at about 6:30 am and enjoy a delightful breakfast. Afterward, you will transfer to the park offices in Kinigi to meet the knowledgeable rangers who will guide you on an exciting golden monkey trek in Volcanoes National Park. The trek will lead you through a beautiful bamboo forest located at the base of Mount Sabinyo Volcano. Finding a habituated troop of over 100 Golden Monkeys is a relatively easy and short trek. Once you locate them, you will have approximately one hour to observe and appreciate these lively and photogenic primates in their natural habitat.

After the golden monkey trek, you will depart for the charming lakeside town of Gisenyi, situated on the shores of Lake Kivu.

At 6:30 am, it's time to check out of your accommodation and get ready for an exciting day ahead. Today, you'll go on a scenic drive to Gishwati Forest, within the Gishwati-Mukura National Park. This protected area is the newest addition to Rwanda's natural wonders and can be reached in about 1.5 hours from Gisenyi.

The Gishwati-Mukura National Park is well-known for its diverse ecosystem, which includes 17 species of Albertine Rift endemic birds. It's an excellent place to discover these unique birds before heading to Nyungwe Forest, where you'll find even more bird species.

Spend the day exploring the habitats of Gishwati Forest and searching for the unique birds that call it home. It's a fantastic opportunity to add to your birdwatching list while enjoying the natural beauty of this emerging national park.

You'll stay overnight at the Forest of Hope Guest House in Gishwati.

Begin your day with an early breakfast, and prepare for an exciting adventure as you leave for Nyungwe Forest National Park, situated in the southwest region of Rwanda. This park is renowned worldwide as an Important Birding Area (IBA) and is home to around 310 bird species. Nyungwe is particularly famous for its abundance of Albertine Rift endemics, making it the ideal destination to encounter these unique bird species. With at least 27 out of the approximately 40 Albertine endemics found here, Nyungwe boasts the highest number of Albertine endemics of any park within the Albertine Rift Valley.

To ensure that you have the best possible chance of seeing all the Albertine Rift endemics, you should dedicate at least three full days to bird watching in Nyungwe Forest. During this time, you will explore various walking trails that traverse the park. If your schedule allows, add extra days to your itinerary to experience even more comprehensive birding adventures in Nyungwe.

As you hike along the trail, be prepared to encounter numerous Albertine Rift endemic bird species, as this area is known for its exceptional birding opportunities. Today, you have an opportunity to experience an exhilarating chimpanzee trek in Nyungwe National Park. The tour starts promptly at 5 am from the Gisakura section of Nyungwe. You will journey into the Cyamudongo Forest, a small tract of forest that falls within the boundaries of Nyungwe National Park but is separate from the larger Nyungwe Forest.

As you make your way through the lush vegetation, you will have the chance to track and observe incredible primates in their natural habitat. The forest provides a stunning backdrop as you search for the chimpanzees. The trek typically ends around noon, giving you plenty of time in the afternoon to continue with Rwanda birdwatching activities.
