The Ultimate Guide To Photographing Striking Gorilla Portraits on Trekking Adventures in Uganda

If you’re planning to photograph gorillas in Uganda and achieve stunning results, here are nine gorilla photography tips to help you capture the perfect shot.

Gorilla Trekking in Uganda offers an unparalleled experience, and photographing these majestic creatures in their natural habitat is a captivating and rewarding art form. However, due to their unpredictable behavior in a natural setting, photographing gorillas effectively requires patience, practice, and skill.

Here is a step-by-step gorilla photography guide in Uganda to assist you in your endeavor, allowing you to capture the essence of these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.

1. Get Low for Intimate Gorilla Shots

The secret to captivating gorilla portraits lies in capturing their raw essence from their perspective. Position yourself as low to the ground as possible. If feasible, sit down or kneel while photographing the gorillas. Although lying flat on the forest floor can yield amazing wildlife pictures, it may not be practical due to the limited space during gorilla treks.

Typically, the trekking groups are tightly controlled, with multiple visitors, rangers, and porters nearby. However, try positioning yourself at eye level or lower to capture the gorillas’ genuine expressions and natural habitat. This perspective establishes a stronger connection between the viewer and the subject, resulting in impactful photos.

Use a Wide Aperture for Impactful Photos

2. Use a Wide Aperture for Impactful Photos

To add more impact to your photos, employ a wide aperture setting on your camera, such as f/2.8. This technique will blur the background and foreground elements, such as leaves and vines, creating soft, colorful smudges and making your gorilla portraits that resonate with emotion and allure.

The aperture is the opening in a camera lens that allows light to enter. A wider aperture enhances exposure and is measured using the f-stop scale, ranging from f/1.2 to f/2.8.

Focus on Their Eyes for Beautiful Catchlights - gorilla photography

3. Focus on Their Eyes for Beautiful Catchlights

Eyes are the windows to the soul, even in the animal kingdom. Direct your focus to the gorillas’ eyes, as they serve as the entry points of your photos. Sharp, well-focused eyes create a strong impact on the viewer, while out-of-focus eyes diminish the desired effect. Look for gorillas with sunlight illuminating their faces, ideally at a 45-degree angle. This interaction of light and shadow adds depth to your gorilla portraits, enabling you to capture their spirit with authenticity. By capturing the catchlights, you bring the gorillas’ expressions to life and add depth to your photographs.

Simplify the Background to Avoid Distractions - photographing gorillas

4. Simplify the Background to Avoid Distractions

When it comes to gorilla photography, there are a few key factors to consider in order to capture the perfect shot. Firstly, it’s important to focus on the subject by using a harmonious environment to create a sense of balance and contrast with the background to highlight their presence. This will draw attention to the gorilla itself and make it the focal point of the image.

In addition to this, it’s crucial to consider the habitat in which the gorilla lives. By showing the environment around the gorilla, you can weave a narrative about its role in the ecosystem, highlighting how it interacts with its surroundings and the other creatures that call the same habitat home.

All these factors combine to create a compelling and visually stunning photograph that not only showcases the gorilla’s beauty but also provides insight into its life and how it fits into the larger ecosystem. So, take your time, choose your location carefully, and let the gorilla be the star of the show!

Use a Long Telephoto Lens for Detailed Shots - gorilla photography

5. Use a Long Telephoto Lens for Detailed Shots

When it comes to taking high-quality silverback gorilla photography, having the right equipment can make all the difference. One essential tool for any photographer’s kit is a telephoto lens. This type of lens allows you to capture detailed shots and eliminate distractions, making it perfect for capturing small or distant objects with precision. The shallow depth of field that a telephoto lens provides can be used to create visually compelling images, particularly in portrait photography. By blurring out the background, you can focus on the subject and draw the viewer’s attention to the details that matter most.

This technique can also be used to great effect when photographing animals in the wild, such as gorillas. With a telephoto lens, you can capture stunning portraits of these majestic creatures up close and personal without disturbing their natural habitat. So if you’re looking to take your silverback gorilla photography to the next level, consider investing in a telephoto lens and start exploring the world of close-up photography.

Use a Wide-Angle Lens for a Complete View

6. Use a Wide-Angle Lens for a Complete View

During gorilla observation and photography, you must maintain a minimum distance of 10 meters (32 feet). Some gorillas may remain hidden in dense vegetation, requiring a long telephoto lens. On the other hand, some gorillas are curious and may approach you, presenting an opportunity to use a wide-angle lens. A wide-angle lens has a short focal length and provides a wide field of view, enabling you to include more background elements. This lens type offers viewers a sense of immersion as if they are experiencing the scene firsthand.

When Photographing Gorillas, Be Patient, Observant, and Quick

7. When Photographing Gorillas, Be Patient, Observant, and Quick

When photographing gorillas, it’s essential to strike a balance of patience, observation, and quick reflexes. The trek to reach your gorilla family may be long, and the anticipation is overwhelming.

Once you arrive, you’ll have only one hour to spend with them. While the initial excitement may compel you to start shooting immediately, take a moment to observe the gorilla family as a whole. Pay attention to each individual and identify the most engaging subjects in the best lighting conditions.

From lounging to foraging, each movement tells a story. Immersion in the gorilla’s environment heightens your ability to anticipate the great ape‘s actions, capture incredible portraits, and preserve their authentic essence.

Experiment with Shutter Speed when photographing gorillas

8. Experiment with Shutter Speed

The choice of shutter speed depends on the gorillas’ movement. Gorilla motion is as varied as their personalities. You have two options: freezing the subject or revealing its motion.

Shutterspeed refers to the length of time the camera’s shutter remains open, determining how much light enters the camera. A fast shutter speed, such as 1/500th of a second or faster, freezes the gorillas’ movements, capturing them in sharp detail. This is ideal for capturing a gorilla’s expressive face or intricate details like fur texture.

On the other hand, a slower shutter speed, such as 1/60th of a second or slower, can create a sense of motion by blurring the gorilla’s movement. Experiment with different shutter speeds to achieve the desired effect in your photos.

9. Respect the Gorillas and Follow Guidelines

While photographing gorillas, it is crucial to respect their natural behavior and follow the guidelines provided by the park authorities and guides. Gorillas are endangered species, and their well-being should always be the top priority. Maintain a safe distance, avoid sudden movements or loud noises, and never touch the gorillas. Always listen to and follow the instructions of your guides, as they have extensive experience in gorilla trekking and ensure the safety of both visitors and gorillas.

Remember, the ultimate goal of gorilla photography is to create stunning images while contributing to their conservation. By capturing their beauty and sharing it with others, you can raise awareness and support for the protection of these incredible creatures and their habitats. Enjoy your gorilla trekking and capturing amazing shots in Uganda!

Essential gear for gorilla photography - Nikon 24-70mm f2.8E VR - the only lense you need for gorilla photos
The perfect lens to photograph gorillas is the 24-70mm f/2.8G ED. It delivers fast, wide-angle to medium telephoto zoom capability. If you have this sweet mama, you don’t need any other gear.

Essential gear for gorilla photography

Gorilla trekking demands preparedness. From camera gear to protective accessories, ensure you’re equipped to seize every photographic opportunity. Among the essentials are a reliable camera, spare battery, tripod for stability, binoculars for up-close viewing, bottled water, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Beyond gorilla photography, gardening gloves prove invaluable in navigating dense vegetation, and energy snacks keep you fueled during this exhilarating adventure.

For gorilla photography in the forest, it’s recommended to use two camera bodies with different lenses: one equipped with a 24-70mm lens for capturing wide-angle photos of gorillas and their habitat and the other with a 70-200mm lens for close-up shots. This avoids the need to change lenses while in the woods, which can cause condensation build-up in the camera and potentially damage it. If you only have one camera body, you may need to choose between the two lenses.

Remember, you flash photography with gorillas, so don’t bring your heavy lighting gear.

What Our Travellers Say

My son and I spent two weeks experiencing African magic with Nkuringo Safaris, and we will never forget our time there. Truly a priceless experience. I could talk about those experiences for pages — the friendly people, the beautiful Nile River where we did whitewater rafting, the tree lions, the chimpanzees, and the majestic mountain gorillas.

Steven Susser

In November 2020, we travelled to Uganda as a couple in a 4×4 Safari Jeep. Considering the difficult time we are all in, we were especially happy about the level of service we experienced. You can travel to Uganda with no problem. During our travel, we felt safer than in Europe – everybody cared about our health and happiness.

Sarah B

Don’t miss out on this unique experience. Our guide, Richard, was excellent. We had an informative and unique walk down the mountain from Kisoro to Lake Mutanda. We walked through villages and saw families actively working their farms. The walk is easy. The dugout canoe was very comfortable, with padded seats. We highly recommend the adventure.

Kwa Alaska

My husband and I had a week’s vacation, which is not a lot given everything we wanted to do/see. Nkuringo organized our trip to make the most of this week. The trip was flawlessly organized. Time management was perfect. They were flexible and accommodating, all our needs were met, and we felt listened to; it was a truly customized experience.

Victoria V

The most beautiful scenery I’ve ever seen. The welcome from a gorgeous team was lovely… hot water bottles in the bed and a fire lit in our room each night made it such a special place.

Travelling Uganda as a couple… our guide knew so much about animals, plants and the country’s history. He was funny and friendly and looked after us incredibly well.

Tom R, USA

We are a travel company ourselves and this company over-delivered for us… The whole thing ran like clockwork, even while making sure everyone was happy with the amount of time spent in each place.
