Safari Overview

This challenging African Jungle Adventure Safari is set in the Ugandan highlands. It drives you from the vibrant cultural cities through the Switz emerald hills and valleys of western Uganda into the Impenetrable rainforest jungle of Bwindi Impenetrable NP and Mgahinga NP, home to more than half of the world’s mountain gorilla population (total population of gorillas currently recorded at 1063 mountain gorillas).

This Africa safari challenge offers a tough and varied trekking experience with the added bonus, and a ‘must see’ experience of a possible close encounter with the endangered mountain gorilla and golden monkey in Mgahinga. Your final destination is the village of Nkuringo, located on a hilltop with spectacular views over Bwindi’s forest canopy. It affords visitors magnificent 360 degree unconstrained views of the surrounding volcanoes.

After around two hours, we will reach the bamboo zone where we hope to find the habituated Golden Monkeys, an endangered species only found in this remote part of Africa.

Day 4: Mgahinga – Lake Mutanda (Approx. 18kms / 9 hours)

After breakfast, take on your second African Jungle Adventure Safari hiking challenge with a trek north towards Kisoro. Your trek today takes you through an area of volcanic craters, some of the slopes of which are being cultivated by the indigenous Bakiga farmers and home also to the Batwa pygmies.

Along your hike through remote native African villages, you meet fascinating people and learn powerful knowledge into the daily lives of local people. Many children and local people will greet us as they tend their fields and livestock and collect water from local springs.

Continue to the shore of the beautiful Lake Mutanda, where you’ll enjoy your packed lunch picnic; If we are lucky, we will see otters swimming close to the shore with a huge array of colorful birdlife, including kingfishers weaver-birds, and cranes.

We continue in a northerly direction, in dug-out canoes piloted by local tribesmen. The 2.5-hour canoe journey passes quickly as the spectacular beauty of the lake, and its surroundings are revealed. We may see fishers checking their nets, people taking produce to market by canoe, and people cutting reeds to be used for construction.

You’ll disembark on the lakes’ northern shore at Rwanjenje and have your guide/driver transfer you to Chameleon Hill Lodge, where you’ll have dinner and spend the night. What an exciting Africa safari day.

Day 5: Walking Safari to Nkuringo

Now, this day is one that’ll call in all your body’s favors as you take on your third African Jungle Adventure Safari challenge of hiking 13 kilometers through authentic, rugged rural Uganda where it’s just you, your thoughts, the magnificent views, and nature battling for the top spot on your attention graph. This part of the safari is what has given our brand the name “Nkuringo Walking Safari.” A name we continue to celebrate and horn.

From here, we start a six-hour trek to the village of Nkuringo at 2,161 meters high on the Nteko Ridge above the forest canopy of Bwindi. The route takes us over and around many of the volcanic calderas that form this millennia-old landscape. You will marvel at the agricultural terraces covering these steep hillsides and wonder why you chose to live in the city.

Our expert guides will take great pleasure in pointing out a wide variety of flora and fauna. For the next four nights, our home will be Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge, which enjoys un-obscured views across the Kinshasha River valley and the chain of volcanoes known as the Virungas stretch across the borders of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Congo.

Day 6: Forest Nature walk – Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

If you didn’t get enough of the Impenetrable forest the previous day, the African Jungle Adventure Safari gives you another unmissable opportunity to get back into the jungle and experience the ambiance of Africa’s oldest rainforest with a snail-pace full-day of nature trekking.

Your jungle challenge starts at 08.00 am. With your guide and armed ranger, commence the Nkuringo Walking Safari activity into the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park as part of the Kashasha River and Ivy River trails. This is a full-day walk where there would be the opportunity to visit the Munyaga River falls in the forest. The emphasis of this activity is for your walking guide to share his knowledge of the forest that you come into contact with and not simply an A to B. The walking distance would be about 15km

You will rendezvous with your vehicle in the village of Nteko on the DR Congo border to be transported 10km back to Nkuringo Gorilla Camp.

Optional Treks

The Batwa Trail

We will have the opportunity to trek through the Nkuringo Pocket Forest that straddles the Nteko Ridge and where we will be treated to an insight into the ancient ways and culture of the local Batwa Pygmy tribes.

Village Trek

We will also have the opportunity to walk to other local villages and enjoy a traditional lunch at one of the village homesteads. You can even help with the preparation and cooking of the food.

It’s about a 10-minute walk from the lodge to the visitors’ reception when tracking Nkuringo group southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. Once there, you will first receive a briefing and at 8.00 am and then start the tracking.

Once you have found the gorillas, you will be able to spend an hour with them. Your time in the forest cannot be pre-determined as every day is different from that previous.
