Uganda is a great destination to experience wildlife viewing in both forest and savannah. Not to be missed is gorilla tracking in Bwindi; while chimps can easily be spotted in Kibale Forest. Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls National Parks offer wonderful savannah safaris with good wildlife viewing, but animals are not as abundant compared to the top parks of Kenya and Tanzania. Ziwa rhino sanctuary and semliki national park are among the hotspots not to miss.

SAFARI ITINERARY IN DETAIL

DAY 1: ARRIVAL ENTEBBE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

Arrival at Entebbe International Airport, pick up by the Hotel and transfer to your accommodation.

DAY 2: BWINDI IMPENETRABLE NATIONAL PARK

After an early breakfast and briefing we will fly you to Kisoro in southern Uganda. During the short flight you will be able to see Uganda´s diversity from high up. We will pick you up from the airstrip and drive you up to Nkuringo. A short distance that can take up to 2 hours.

Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge is set 2160 metres above sea level and offers stunning views looking north over the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, south to the volcanoes of the Virunga and west into the rift valley and the DR Congo.
After lunch we will take you for a community walk with one of our guides from the camp; he will basically introduce you to his family.

DAY 3: GORILLA TRACKING ACTIVITY

At 8 am the gorilla trekking will start with a detailed briefing about gorilla etiquette. Depending on which family you are trekking, the briefing point is either 300 meters or 23 kms away. After the briefing we will either start walking from there or will be driven to the closest starting point. We will then start searching for the gorillas. Once we find them, we will be allowed to spend 1 hour with them.

DAY 4: FOREST NATURE WALK – BWINDI FOREST

You have the opportunity to undertake a full day trekking, accompanied by our local guides through the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest one of the most diverse habitats on earth and home to 120 species of mammals, 200 varieties of tree and more than 50 reptiles.

08.00am with your guide commence the Nkuringo Walking Safari activity into the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park as part of the Kashasha River and Ivy River trails. This is a full day walk where there would be opportunity to visit the Munyaga River falls in the forest. The emphasis of this activity is for your walking guide to share his knowledge of the forest that you come into contact with and not simply an A to B. The walking distance would be about 15km
You will rendezvous with your vehicle in the village of Nteko on the DR Congo border to be transported 10km back to Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge

DAY 5: COMMUNITY WALK AND CANOE EXCURSION ON LAKE MUTANDA

Depart Nkuringo after breakfast with your Nkuringo Walking Safari guide to commence walk to Lake Mutanda having been dropped by your safari vehicle at Rubuguri Junction. Here a 9km walk to the north shore of the lake is conducted where the dugout canoe team will rendezvous at the Rwajenje landing site with you to complete a traverse of the lake over 2 and 1/2 hours to the southern shore. From the southern shore it is a 90 minute walk into Kisoro town.

Then we will drive past Kisoro to Mount Gahinga National Park. Overnight: twin room at Volcanoes Mgahinga Lodge

DAY 6: GOLDEN MONKEY TRACKING

Mount Gahinga National Park is with 33 km² the smallest national park but its flora and fauna and the three volcanoes offer a wide range of activities. You will report Ntebeko gate to conduct the Golden Monkey tracking activity. Golden Monkeys a unique species which can only be found on the volcanoes of the Virunga and in Nungwe forest in Rwanda. The tracking and viewing activity is generally conducted over a 4 to 5 hour window.

Optional activity – Mt Sabinyo Volcano Climb

Tracking Approx 8 hours

After breakfast proceed to Mgahinga National Park head quarters for briefing to the start a Volcano climb of Mount Sabinyo. Mt. Sabinyo, at 3,669m, takes about eight hours to cover the 14km round trip,
following a steep ridge up to the peak this trek will be conducted in the company of your Nkuringo Walking Safari guide.
Mount Sabinyo, known locally as ‘Old Man’s Teeth’ because of its serrated rim, an extinct volcano and at 3645 meters it is one of the region’s highest peaks.

DAY 7: MGAHINGA – KISORO – QUEEN ELIZABETH NATIONAL PARK

Early morning breakfast at 7:00am to then transfer to Kisoro Airstrip for connecting flight to Kasese Airstrip, meet with your driver guide to continue to the Park. Game drive en-route to your accommodation.

DAY 8: FULL DAY QUEEN ELIZABETH NATIONAL PARK.

After an early morning game viewing, you will proceed directly to the head of the Mweya Peninsular to conduct a launch trip on the Kazinga Channel which is a home to one of the largest concentrations of hippopotamus, as well as herds of elephants, buffalo, and other wildlife that come to drink from the river. The Kazinga also attracts a tremendous variety of bird species including the African Eagle, Open-Billed Stork, and Pied Kingfishers. After the boat cruise you will head to your accommodation for the night

Kyambura Gorge

The gorge is within the savannah sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park. This 16 kilometre long scar in the earth is home to a group of habituated chimpanzees, baboons, monkeys and birds. The gorge is about 100m deep to where organised chimpanzee trekking can be conducted; bird watching, nature walks and sightseeing can be undertaken from the visitors centre.

DAY 9: QUEEN – KIBALE FOREST NATIONAL PARK

Enjoy another game drive as you drive to Fort Portal. This is the lively and active town around Kibale Forest National Park. This park offers one of the most varied tracts of tropical forest in Uganda, 70 mammal species and 13 primate species.

The drive takes about 3-4 hours arriving on time in Fort Portal for lunch.
After lunch we will shake off the long drive with a walk to the “top of the world” along crater lakes which this area is also famous for.

DAY 10: CHIMPANZEE TRACKING AND BIGODI WETLAND SANTUARY

An early start and a long day are ahead of you! Today you will track chimpanzees and will not only learn about them but also about the flora and fauna of the national park. In the afternoon visit the Bigodi community.
Bigodi village is situated in the highlands of western Uganda, in the shadow of the Ruwenzori Mountains, the famous “Mountains of the Moon”. Our community is located about 40 kilometers south of the town of Fort Portal, and borders Kibale National Park, which has the highest density of primate life in the world in its forests.
Since 1992, the people of Bigodi have worked together as a community to open our natural beauty to eco-tourists and to bring our crafts and handiwork to the world.

DAY 11: KIBALE FOREST – MURCHISON NATIONAL PARK

Have an early breakfast, drive via the Escarpment, enjoy the land scape as you set off Murchison Falls National Park; This day will be a long driving day of 7-9 hours; we will have numerous stops to stretch your legs.
Enjoy a game drive game as you catch them from their hunt expeditions before continuing to the lodge.

DAY 12: GAME DRIVE AND LAUNCH CRUISE

After breakfast, enjoy the game drive with a view of; giraffes, elephants, lions, hartebeest and different species of birds, on the way to the morning delta boat ride to the bottom of the waterfall. Look out for the Nile crocodile, hippos, water bucks and a variety of bird species. Upon reaching the bottom of the waterfalls you will disembark and climb your way up to the Top of the Falls where you will be rewarded with amazing views of the Nile. Also be on the lookout for different birdspecies. Look out for mammals like the graceful Roth child Giraffe, Jackson’s Hartebeest, Uganda Kob, Defassa Waterbuck, Buffaloes, Elephants, Warthog, Hippos, Oribi and when lucky a leopard and Lion among others. Hike up to the top of the falls and enjoy the magnificent view before retiring back to the lodge.

DAY 13: MURCHISON FALLS NATIONAL PARK – BUDONGO FOREST

After an early morning breakfast, we will set off for Chimpanzee tracking in Budongo Forest, we will arrive just in time for our packed lunches and later proceed for briefing with the UWA rangers, giving us instructions on the different behaviors as we approach the Chimpanzees in the wild. Later after an hour or two with our closest cousins, we shall drive back the northern sector of Murchison falls National Park. We arrive the lodge just in time for dinner and get a good night`s rest in preparation for next days` activities.

DAY 14: MURCHISON FALLS NATIONAL PARK TO ENTEBBE.

This morning, after your breakfast, you will enjoy a morning game drive in search of more wildlife, later return to the lodge for breakfast and check out and transfer to Entebbe via the Zziwa Rhino Sanctuary for lunch and drive on to Entebbe.

DAY 15: DEPARTURE

Depending on the time of depature, you can engage in different activities in Entebbe to include Chimpanzee up close, Behind the Scene Experience, Mambamba Swamp walk and Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary.
