Safari Overview

Take the north-western circuit to Murchison Falls NP to catch sight of the ‘Big Five’ and adventure down into the western Uganda wildlife corridor on this explosively planned 16 Day Explore Uganda Safari Adventure trip. The trip explores Uganda’s top 5 attractions giving you the best of both Africa safari worlds, the scenic savanna plains, and the rainforest jungles.

From the savanna plains of Murchison Falls, delved deep into Kibale Forest floors and spend time with the playful cousins of the Homo sapiens, the chimpanzee bands, as they go on their daily foraging and social business. Then later, explore another African savanna gem, Uganda’s most famous, Queen Elizabeth National Park, where lions roam the savannas, and thousands flock to the Kazinga Channel shores for a sip of freshwater.

The highlight of this explosive Africa safari vacation will be in the undisputed impenetrable jungles of Bwindi Forest, where you’ll take an excursion to track the elusive mountain gorilla, visit native local communities and hike into nature trails that will leave your travel spirit washed in nature’s own ambiance. Know before you go

  • You’ll be a 4×4 custom Africa safari truck across five of Uganda’s top attractions starting from Murchison Falls, cross over to Kibale, Queen Elizabeth, Bwindi Impenetrable, and Lake Mburo National Park. Remember, this trip can be tailor-made to suit your liking.
  • The tour is limited to a maximum of 5 travelers per vehicle and a 30% deposit on the confirmation.
  • You’ll be required to have a NEGATIVE PCR COVID-19 Test certificate issued not more than 72 hours before entry into the country. Another test will be required before your exit at the end of the trip. Have a FACEMASK on is mandatory while in public places. General FAQs

  • You can reschedule this trip as a private tour to any date up to 12 months at no cost.
  • A 30% deposit of the total tour price will be required to secure a booking, the balance being due 45 days before the tour departure date.
  • Bookings not secured by the appropriate deposit will be released.
  • Cancellation between 90 and 45 days of tour departure will incur a 20% of tour price penalty charge. Confirmed bookings cancelled within 45 days of the tour departure date or no show will incur 100% of tour price penalty charge.
  • Availability of accommodation and activities is not guaranteed; reservations will be made after receiving confirmation of the final itinerary and the payment of the requested deposit. Should any of the quoted accommodations not be available, we reserve the right to substitute it with an alternative suitable option, which might affect the final quoted price.
  • All clients who participate in this tour must be adequately covered by medical insurance as well as travel insurance to protect them in case of unforeseen circumstances.

Gorilla and Chimpanzee Permits will be guaranteed ONLY upon receipt of the deposit (US$750 for both permits in Jan to Jun 2020 and US$900 in Jul-Dec 2020) since we need to immediately pay Uganda Wildlife Authority Offices in order to secure the permits.

Cancellations received on full payment:

  • More than 90 days before the tracking date, 25% cancellation fee
  • 89 to 46 days before the tracking date, 50% cancellation fee
  • 45 to 9 days before the tracking date, 75% cancellation fee
  • 8 to 0 days before the tracking date, 100% cancellation fee

Important: the minimum age required for gorilla tracking is 15 years whereas for the chimps the minimum age required is 12 years; in case of flu or of any other airborne disease the visitor will be not allowed to meet with the gorillas or the chimps.

Detailed Itinerary


Day 1: Arrival at Entebbe International Airport

Arrival at Entebbe International Airport, a Nkuringo Safaris driver will pick you from the Airport and transfer you to your hotel in Entebbe. (15 minutes)

Day 2: Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary – Murchison Falls NP

With an early breakfast, we set off for the 14 Day Explore Uganda Safari as we transfer you to Ziwa rhino sanctuary in Nakasongora (en-route to Murchison Falls NP), where you’ll track (on foot) the only white rhinos in Uganda surviving up to date.

You’ll have lunch at the sanctuary, and then the driver will transfer you to the day’s destination, Murchison Falls, accessing the park entrance through the northern bank.

Day 3: Murchison Falls NP, Game Drive & Boat Safari

Wake up early at 06.30. Transfer for 20 minutes to Paraa, where you’ll take an Explore Uganda Safari boat trip into the Victoria Nile Delta area of the National Park. The delta area is quite spectacular, with several endemic mammal species to be seen to include Rothschild’s giraffe and the African elephant. The legendary Shoebill stork (bird with a beak that looks like a shoe) that missed the evolution bus may be seen in the delta: a must-see species for the avid birding enthusiast.

Return to the lodge for lunch at about 13.45. After lunch, you will again leave the lodge and return to Paraa to take another scheduled boat launch trip on the Nile to the Murchison Falls foot.

The Nile riverbanks often host elephants in the afternoon, crocodiles are monstrous, and the waterfalls themselves spectacular. The riverbank is also home to the Red-throated bee-eater, a local endemic to Murchison Falls National Park.

You will have the opportunity to disembark the boat launch at the drop off point close to the falls base (approximately 750m) to be met by a UWA ranger/guide to follow the riverbank footpath that leads up to the top of the rainbow lit falls. The walking trail from the drop-off point to the head of the falls will take about 45 hours. Your safari vehicle will rendezvous with you at the top of the falls.

Day 4: Explore Murchison Falls National Park Savanna Plains

With breakfast in the morning, we shall have an Explore Uganda Safari action-packed morning game drive adventuring into the African savanna plains to catch sight of the wild drama. Watch out for the Albert endemic birds and Rothschild giraffes, buffalos, elephants, and if you’re lucky, lions and leopards as they go on their daily drama.

In the afternoon, after the lunch break, you will have another Africa safari action-packed evening to explore the park again. Retire your day at the lodge as your warm-up for the next day’s activities.

Day 5: Murchison Falls – Kibale Forest

This is an African countryside road trip day where the Explore Uganda Safari may take 8 hours off your adventure life and reward you with some rare countryside views and Uganda roads experience.

You will depart Bakers Lodge via the rift valley escarpment road offering spectacular views over Lake Albert to DR Congo and West Nile, passing via the towns of Biso, Hoima, Kenjojo, and onto Fort Portal to your overnight accommodation venue within Kibale Forest National Park at Primate Lodge. The venue is a great starting point for Chimpanzee tracking.

En-route to the lodge, we will shake off the long drive with a walk to the “top of the world” along crater lakes area famous for crater lakes view and view of the mountain of the moon.

Day 6: Kibale Forest Chimpanzee Tracking

Wake up early for your next Explore Uganda Safari experience with the free-roaming chimps in the Kibale forest jungle. Be at the trailhead in Kanyanchu by 07:00, ready to set off your chimpanzee excursion. You’ll spend the better half of the morning with a habituated Chimpanzees troop, following them around.

While tracking, you will spot different animal species like the Red Colobus, Black and white Colobus, Grey-cheeked Mangabey, Olive Baboon, Red-tailed Monkey, and L’Hoest’s Monkey, among others and different bird species. Whilst trekking in the depths of the lush green forest, you will be surrounded by bird song and can expect to see at least 5 or 6 other types of primate, most probably the grey‐cheeked mangabey and the red‐tailed monkey and of course the chimpanzee. The walking is fairly easy due to the well‐maintained trails and reasonably flat terrain.

The afternoon will be spent taking a walk within the Bigodi swamps and walking through village communities guided before you retire back at the lodge.

Day 8: Kibale to Queen Elizabeth NP

After early morning breakfast, transfer to Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary for a nature walk; rich in biodiversity and beautiful scenery, the wetland is a birder’s paradise with about 138 species. Located outside the park in Magombe Swamp, it hosts eight primates species, including the black-and-white colobus, grey-cheeked mangabey, red-tailed, L’’Hoest’s and blue monkeys, and olive baboons. Bushbucks and mongooses can also be found here. The sanctuary was set up to preserve the exclusive environmental features and the wetland and is managed by the local community.

Later depart Kibale Forest to Queen Elizabeth National Park, lying 1978 sq. km west of Uganda. It harbors a diverse eco-system with lovely African savanna plains, fertile wetlands making it home for the big game, 10 primate species, and many bird species.

After checking in, you will your Explore Uganda safari driver transfer you to Mweya for an afternoon boat launch safari along the Kazinga channel. The channel is 40 wide and offers beautiful scenery of hundreds of hippos along the banks and different bird species seen when cruising west towards Lake Edward.

Day 8: Queen Elizabeth National Park

The day begins early as we head for the Uganda Kobs mating grounds in hopes of catching sight of the predators swarming the unsuspecting antelopes. We search for lions, elephants, buffaloes, and other wild animals in their natural habitat, before returning to the lodge for lunch.

In the early afternoon, you will have the opportunity to stretch your legs visiting the Maramagambo Forest for a walk through the tropical forest. It is known for the Blue Lake and the Bat and Hunters Cave. You will get the chance to have a close look at the bats and maybe even the rock python and forest cobras that feed on the bats. The same walk will provide you with views of primates, different bird species, and beautiful fauna.

Day 9: Ishasha Sector Wilderness

After breakfast, you may choose the Explore Uganda Safari optional/added activity of exploring Kyambura Wildlife Reserve (not included in the quote).

Driving through a grassland area, a sudden halt will reveal an amazing gorge of one hundred meters deep, covered with tropical rainforest. Hike into the gorge of the Kyambura River in search of the wild chimpanzees. It is a beautiful walk through the river valley, home to many birds and butterfly species.

After lunch, proceed to the Ishasha sector, very famous for the tree-climbing lions. The Ishasha sector is the only other place in the entire world where you will find tree-climbing lions apart from Lake Manyara National Park in Tanzania. Later retire to the Lodge

Day 10: Ishasha Sector Wildlife Drama/h4>

Spend the day enjoying African savanna game drives in the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park.
The Ishasha area of Queen Elizabeth National Park is rich with wildlife, including warthog, waterbuck, bushbuck, leopard, Ugandan kob, elephants, countless bird species, and even the rare giant forest hog. The Ishasha sector of the park is known for its famous tree-climbing lions sometimes found lying about in the native fig tree branches.

Day 11: Ishasha – Bwindi Impenetrable NP

Today we will depart the beautiful area of Queen Elizabeth and drive to the southwest via Ishasha sector with a game drive searching for tree-climbing lions, thereafter proceed to Buhoma sector and continue to Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge or take an optional guided walk through the impenetrable forest.

In Buhoma, the northern side of the park, you will meet our Nkuringo Walking Safari guide, who will walk with you 4 hours through the forest to Nkuringo, on the southern side via the Ivy River trail, which is the shortest route. Yours explore Uganda safari guide will drive around to the lodge and meet you there, so we recommend you pack a little day pack as the chances are high that you will arrive before him. A packed lunch will be provided.

NOTE: (walk through the forest to nkuringo via Ivy river trail, which is the shortest route is USD 150 for a group between 1 – 4 and covers ranger escort fees in the forest, Nkuringo walking safari guide and porters to carry the client’s luggage. Extras could be the park entrance fees at USD 40 per person, vehicle transfer from Nteko ridge to Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla lodge at USD 100 per group in the vehicle with fuel.)

Your arrival in Nkuringo will see you at 2160m above sea level. From the vantage of Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge, a 270-degree panorama will hopefully unfold to reveal views of the volcanoes of the Virunga, the western arm of the Great Rift Valley, and a huge swathe of primary forest that constitutes the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, National Park.

Day 12: Gorilla Tracking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

The highlight of your Explore Uganda Safari Adventure starts when you wake early (06:00), have your breakfast, and be at the trailhead in time for the gorilla tracking briefing. Once there, you will first receive a briefing and at 8.00 am and then start the tracking.

Once you have found the gorillas, you will be able to spend an hour watching and learning from them. Your time in the forest cannot be pre-determined, though, because every day is different from the previous based on weather patterns, gorilla movements, and other factors considered.

On your return to your vehicle, you will proceed directly to Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge. Visit the top of the world in the evening, and on a clear day, you can see a line of the 5 volcano mountains later retire your day at the lodge.

Day 13: Second Gorilla Tracking Experience

Tracking the mountain gorilla for the second time is a great experience. You get to ignore attention-seeking things like your camera or anxiety of seeing the great apes for the first time and concentrate on receiving your great dose of emotions while spending precious once-in-a-lifetime moments with a mountain gorilla family. This is a highly recommended activity of the explore Uganda safari you should consider taking.

Remember: you have to purchase a second gorilla permit because the permit cannot be reused.

Early breakfast and packed lunch, transfer to Rushaga sector, located 23 km from Nkuringo Bwindi gorilla lodge (or chose to track the previous day’s group). Proceed to the park headquarters for the briefing before continuing to track the amazing gorillas. Remember, each gorilla group has different behaviors so expect something unique from this group. Visit the top of the world in the evening, and on a clear day, you can see a line of the 5 volcano mountains later retire your day at the lodge.

Day 14: Bwindi to Lake Mburo National Park

After breakfast, you’ll join your explore Uganda safari driver for another exciting road trip through western Uganda’s Switz like emerald hills and winding roads, through the beautiful towns of Kabale, Mbarara, and stopover at Igongo Cultural Centre for lunch.

After lunch, proceed a few kilometers to Lake Mburo National Park, where your accommodation will be at Mihingo Lodge. A provision of 6 to 7 hours on the road between venues should be considered.

Mihingo Lodge is situated on a series of rock outcrops on the park’s boundary with views of Lake Opeta. Each of the accommodations is very private and beautifully sited. The lodge has a gorgeous infinity pool where the dining room overlooks a human-made waterhole that draws in-game to include on occasions Eland antelope.

Activities: – Conduct a boat trip on Lake Mburo in the afternoon; thereafter, proceed with your guide on game drive en-route to the Lodge.

Day 15: Lake Mburo National Park Savanna

With picnic breakfast, allow a four-hour hike up to hilltop viewpoints where exciting horse safaris start from. Horseback safaris are an exciting way to view wildlife, including eland and buffalo. Also commonly sighted are warthog, topi, impala, duiker, bushbuck, waterbuck, and zebra. Transfer back to the lodge for lunch and relaxation and thereafter proceed for an evening game drive, which will expose you to the wildlife you would have missed during the horse safari.

Day 16: Mburo to Entebbe

Return to Entebbe after a late breakfast anticipated driving time 6 hours on the road. En route, you will pass the equator, where a coffee break can be taken, and possibly the lodge’s picnic lunch. Transfer directly to Airport for an outbound flight.
