Safari Overview

This 11 Day Uganda Birding & Gorilla Tour will explore the country’s remarkable avian diversity of over 1000 species that make it a birding hot spot for avian enthusiasts. Uganda’s rich bird species can be attributed to its location between the East African savannah, West African rainforests and semi-desert of the north.

This Africa safari will take you to birding hot zones like Lake Mburo NP, Lake Bunyonyi near Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, a jungle destination you’ll be hiking to find also the elusive mountain gorilla. You’ll also be visiting Queen Elizabeth’s Maramagambo forest and exploring the savanna plains to catch sight of the big African game. Make sure you have your bird list because this trip will make sure you tick them off one-by-one while having a great adventure in Africa..

  • You’ll be birding from Entebbe through Lake Mburo to Bwindi Impenetrable and end in QENP all done in a 4×4 custom safari truck.
  • The tour is limited to a maximum of 6 travelers per vehicle, and 30% deposit on confirmation.

General FAQs

  • You can reschedule this trip as a private tour to any date up to 12 months at no cost.
  • A 30% deposit of the total tour price will be required to secure a booking, the balance being due 45 days before the tour departure date.
  • Bookings not secured by the appropriate deposit will be released.
  • Cancellation between 90 and 45 days of tour departure will incur a 20% of tour price penalty charge. Confirmed bookings cancelled within 45 days of the tour departure date or no show will incur 100% of tour price penalty charge.
  • Availability of accommodation and activities is not guaranteed; reservations will be made after receiving confirmation of the final itinerary and the payment of the requested deposit. Should any of the quoted accommodations not be available, we reserve the right to substitute it with an alternative suitable option, which might affect the final quoted price.
  • All clients who participate in this tour must be adequately covered by medical insurance as well as travel insurance to protect them in case of unforeseen circumstances.

Rates specified for this tour are subject to change without notice, however, every effort will be made to maintain them. In the event of any change of Government taxes or operating conditions that affect the rates we reserve the right to pass on these charges.

UGANDA GORILLA PERMIT CANCELLATION POLICY
(different and separate from the tour cancellation policy)

Gorilla and Chimpanzee Permits will be guaranteed ONLY upon receipt of the deposit (US$750 for both permits in Jan to Jun 2020 and US$900 in Jul-Dec 2020) since we need to immediately pay Uganda Wildlife Authority Offices in order to secure the permits.

Cancellations received on full payment:

  • More than 90 days before the tracking date, 25% cancellation fee
  • 89 to 46 days before the tracking date, 50% cancellation fee
  • 45 to 9 days before the tracking date, 75% cancellation fee
  • 8 to 0 days before the tracking date, 100% cancellation fee

Important: the minimum age required for gorilla tracking is 15 years whereas for the chimps the minimum age required is 12 years; in case of flu or of any other airborne disease the visitor will be not allowed to meet with the gorillas or the chimps.

Detailed Itinerary

1

Day 1: Birding in Entebbe Environs

Start your private Uganda Birding & Gorilla Tour with bird watching around the shores of Lake Victoria.

From the lake shores and wetlands search for birds such as for Blue Monarch, Brown Twin Spots, Fain tailed Widow bird, Moustached Warbler, White headed Barbets, Black headed Gonolek, Striped Kingfisher, African Pied hornbill, Diederik’s Cuckoo, Black Bishop, among others. After lunch, visit the Uganda Wildlife Education centre where you will see different birds such as Ostriches, African grey parrots, the Peacock, crested cranes, Egyptian goose among others.

Day 2: Birding Tour in Mabamba Swamps

After early breakfast you will set off Mabamba Wetland also found at the shores of Lake Victoria. This is the nearest birding destination where the rare Shoebill stork can be seen. Other birds that can e seen include the Lesser Jacana, Black-Shouldered Nightjar, Blue Swallow, Blue Breasted Bee-Eater, White Winged Warbler, Papyrus Gonolek among others. Transfer to Lake Mburo National Park, having lunch enroute.

Day 3: Birding Tour in Lake Mburo NP

Early in the morning carry out a game drive through Lake Mburo National Park’s savanna plains for your third Uganda Birding & Gorilla Tour day.

On the drive different animals as well as birds habituated in African savannah grasslands and woodlands can be seen. Punctuated with many lakes surrounded by swamps, the park has also attracted various water-loving bird species. Return to the lodge for breakfast. Relax as you wait for your lunch. After lunch proceed to the lake for a boat ride. On the boat ride several animals such as crocodiles, hippopotamuses and birds like Pelicans, Black crake, Heron, cormorant, fish eagle, you may also sight the rare Shoebill Stork may be seen.

Day 4: Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi

Morning game drive in Lake Mburo and transfer via the town of Mbarara further south to Kabale to overnight on an Island on Lake Bunyonyi, one of the highly rated Uganda Birding & Gorilla Tour destination.

After checking in at the lodge, carry out some birding around the shores of Lake Bunyonyi. Relax in the evening at this beautiful island.

Day 5: Lake Bunyonyi Boat Rides and Island Visits

Your rpivate Uganda Birding & Gorilla Tour takes on the place of birds (Bunyonyi). Among the birds to expect in lake Bunyonyi include grey crowned cranes, levillant cuckoo, white tailed monad, slender-billed baglafetch, weavers, African harrier hawk, egrets, cardinal woodpecker, grey crowned cranes, African king fisher, herons.

After having breakfast, take on a morning boat ride on Lake Bunyonyi visiting the Islands where different species of birds and migratory birds from Europe can be seen. A visit to the Akampene Island where the Bakiga used to dump unmarried pregnant girls is anther memorable adventure you can take on this island. Return to the Lodge for Lunch.

Day 6: Lake Bunyonyi – Bwindi Impenetrable NP

After breakfast embark on motorized canoe from the accommodation with local birding guide for 2 hour and later rendenzous with your guide at Muko landing site to continue the journey on the edge of Bwindi Impenetrable forest. In the afternoon conduct birding around the Nkuringo village with possibility of visiting the Buniga pocket forest for more birding.

Day 7: Mountain Gorilla Trekking Adventure

The Uganda Birding & Gorilla Tour takes another turn and takes you on an adventure to find the endangered mountain gorilla while looking out for your bird list.

Wake up very early for a gorilla tour in the dense tropical Afromontane forest of Bwindi Impenetrable. Seeing the few elusive gentle giants moving in families is quite a memorable experience which cant easily be got any where in Africa.

On the search for these World Giants from the steeper forested sides, different birds as well as other primates can be seen. Bwindi a varied habitat which means it is the ideal home for a variety of birds, with 350 species recorded, including 23 endemics (90% of all Albertine Rift endemics) such as the Short-tailed Warbler and Blue-headed Sunbird as well as seven IUCN red data listed species.

Day 8: Traverse the floors of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

With walking safari and passionate birding guide traverse the Bwindi Impenetrable forest walk through the different trails where you may get the chance to see the Albertine Rift endemics such as African Green Broadbill, Chapin’s Flycatcher and Shelley’s Crimson-wing. Other interesting bird species that can be seen include the African Green Broadbill, Shelley’s Crimson wing, Black–faced Rufous, Warbler, Grauer’s Warbler, Banded Prinia, Black-faced Apalis, Mountain Masked Apalis and the Yellow-eyed Black-Flycatcher among others.

Day 9: Queen Elizabeth NP Savanna Game Drive & Birding

Early in the morning take on your Uganda Birding & Gorilla Tour challenge with a game drive through Queen Elizabeth National Park Ishasha sector and proceed on to the Kasenyi sector.

In the savanna grassland and woodlands, different birds can be seen which include the Martial Eagle, Lesser Flamingoes, Black-rumped Buttonquail, African Skimmer, Ovampo Sparrow hawk, Verreaux’s Eagle-Owl, White-tailed Lark, Saddle-billed Storks, Red Footed Falcon, Papyrus Gonolek and Papyrus Canary among others.

Return to the lodge for lunch in the evening visit the Katwe salt works and please don’t forget to keep an eye out for the different birds at this salty lake and the neighboring lush environments.

Day 10: Queen Elizabeth National Park

Early morning adventure in the Maramagambo Forest (part of Queen Elizabeth Park). From this tropical moist forest you will see different forest birds such as Hornbills, Kingfishers and Sunbirds. Other highlights are Bat Cave where thousands of Egyptian Fruit Bats stay, a small bluish transparent Blue Lake and Hunter’s Cave. Proceed to Mweya reaching in time for a launch cruise on Kazinga channel.

Day 11: Fly from Kisoro – Entebbe

Early morning game drive or birding in the Kyambura gorge and there after transfer to Entebbe via Mbarara with lunch stop at the Igongo Cultural Centre.
