Discounted Gorilla Permits and Promotional Rates For 2023
The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) currently does not offer discounted gorilla permits for foreigners in 2023. UWA last published promotional permit rates in December 2020-21. We assume the discounts were triggered by the travel slump brought on by the pandemic.
At the time, gorilla permits cost 57% less than the regular price; chimp permits were $50 less, and birding and park entry fees also were discounted at 50% off. UWA hasn’t committed to any discounts since then, and there’s no telling when they’ll publish new discounts.
However, UWA occasionally comes up with such discounted periods to attract more travelers, especially during shoulder seasons or low travel months of March to May & September to November when the rains come and travelers avoid the countryside. The rainy season also compels most camps, lodges, and hotels to offer discounts that attract low-season travelers. You can literally walk into a lodge during the rains and get a room at the lowest price without a reservation.

Gorilla trekking permits in Uganda are, by law are sold at face value, which means that travelers should not pay more than the price UWA has published. Travelers can book directly at the UWA head office in Kampala or through a licensed local tour operator.
When you book the permit with a tour operator, they usually add logistics fees (of about $10 – $100 per permit) but will clearly show the price of the permit as that published by UWA.
