    Detailed Itinerary

Hiking the Mahoma Trail on the lower slopes of the Rwenzori Mountains is an incredible way to explore the heavenly biodiversity of the ethereal mountains without climbing to the peaks.

The 28-kilometer trekking trail explores a cross-section of the natural heritage of the Mountains of the Moon, an excellent choice for hiking starters which leads to the peaks of Ibanda and Kilembe. This trail ends at Lake Mahoma, where it snakes into the longer Central Circuit trail to the park gate.

Although they are not as spectacular as the Himalayas, Andes, or the Alps, there is something ethereal about the Rwenzori Mountains that enthralls trekkers. Its perpetual mists, the wild plants that seem better suited for some paranormal science fantasy world. Is it the rime-encrusted glaciers less than 50 kilometers from the equator, its long and fabled history? Or is it the difficulty to access the mountains and the historical insecurity around them that makes the Rwenzoris the world's greatest treasures?

Let's take a close look at the detailed itinerary below:

Day 1: Entebbe — Kasese Town

Your adventure takes you westward! Your private safari driver will whisk you away from Entebbe, through the vibrant Ugandan countryside towards Kasese Town. Nestled at the foot of the mighty Rwenzori Mountains, near the DR-Congo border, Kasese will be your base camp for the thrilling trek ahead.

Upon arrival at your lodge, let your guide assist you with your trekking gear and packing. As you settle in, take some time to acclimate to the altitude change. Breathe in the crisp mountain air and feel the excitement build – your journey into the Rwenzoris is about to begin!

You'll stay at: Equator Snow Lodge / Mihunga Lodge

Day 2: Nyakalengija Gate — Omuka Kizza Rest Camp at 2,977 meters

Your Rwenzori trek begins here! Immerse yourself in the vibrant rainforest as you follow the Mahoma trail along the Kyambogho Ridge. The Mubuku Valley unfolds below, a patchwork of green. Listen for the playful calls of Colobus and Blue Monkeys, perhaps even the rustling of a chimpanzee passing through. Keep a sharp eye out for signs of the elusive forest elephant – you might just catch a glimpse of these gentle giants.

This trail is a birder's paradise! Scan the branches for the dazzling Rwenzori Turaco, and watch the forest floor for the camouflaged Three-Horned Chameleon.

Tonight, Kizza Rest Camp will be your haven. Enjoy breathtaking views of the Rwenzoris, the twinkling lights of Kasese town in the distance, and the foothills bathed in fading sunlight.

Remember, dinner at camp takes time – pack some snacks like granola bars or dried fruit to keep you fueled on the trail. And don't forget your water bottle; refill it from our reserves to stay hydrated throughout your trek.

Day 3: Omuka Kizza Rest Camp — Lake Mahoma 3,515 meters

Fuel up with an early breakfast, then tackle the trail with renewed vigor! Today, your destination is the breathtaking Mahoma Lake. As you ascend through vibrant bamboo and heather forests, your guide might point out fresh elephant tracks. Imagine the thrill of following their path, perhaps even encountering these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.

Trek higher, along a ridge that opens into the incredible Rukenga Valley. Here, the landscape transforms – admire the otherworldly Everlasting Flowers and the towering Giant Lobelias reaching towards the sky.

Remember, there's no restaurant tucked away in these mountains! Your dedicated team will prepare a delicious meal at camp. While you wait, soak in the beauty of the lake scenery – a reward for your day's effort, with the promise of a warm meal and the symphony of the wilderness as your backdrop.

Day 4: Lake Mahoma – Nyakalengija Gate – Ruboni Village

After a well-earned breakfast, embark on a leisurely walk around the shores of Lake Mahoma. Breathe in the crisp mountain air and soak in the final views of this pristine wilderness. As you descend back through the Nyabitaba ranger post, keep your eyes peeled for the unique three-horned chameleons – their incredible camouflage makes them masters of disguise.

The trail winds along the Mpanga ridge, eventually rejoining the Mubuku Valley. Your trek concludes back at the base in Ruboni Village, just outside Kasese town.

Tonight, rest and recharge in the comfort of Equator Snow Lodge or Mihunga Lodge. Reflect on your incredible Rwenzori Mountains adventure as you prepare for the next leg of your journey.

Day 5: Drive back to Entebbe

After a leisurely breakfast, your private driver will be ready to take you back to Entebbe. The scenic drive takes about 6-8 hours, so settle in and enjoy the journey.

Need to freshen up before your late flight? We can arrange a convenient stop for you to recharge and get ready.

Alternatively, if you'd like to extend your stay, let us know! We'll gladly book you a night at the comfortable Papyrus Guesthouse (this would be an additional cost). Let us know your preference, and we'll handle all the details.
