The late Mrs. Rosamond Halsey Carr founded the orphanage in late 1994 to care for the orphaned children during the genocide. Mrs. Carr witnessed all of Rwanda's historical events, including the gruesome genocide of 1994, and her inspiring story is chronicled in her book, "Land of a Thousand Hills: My Life in Rwanda."
