The Itinerary

Set off on a once-in-a-lifetime journey in Uganda’s lush highlands on this premium Uganda Gorilla Safari Adventure. Take a local flight over vast emerald landscapes and remote hamlets dotting the hilly green countryside. Be charmed by fertile volcanic slopes neatly planted with dense rows of cowpea and string beans as far as the eye can see. Once on the ground, hike through the remote villages with a raw display of remote cultures and happy people. Seeing and spending peaceful yet electric (and well-chaperoned) time with mountain gorillas is a rare, heart-filling experience on this trip. Elevate that experience with a great selection of exotic forest lodges where you’ll stay and immerse yourself in local cultures.

On the last day of this Uganda gorilla trekking safari is challenging to hike through the oldest trails in Africa’s oldest and most endowed jungle. With an expert guide, you’ll walk into the impenetrable jungle, showing you some of the rarest plants, ancient tree species, rare birds, and shy animals that live under the forest canopy. This trip is private and customizable, and it means you can take it solo or with friends and family and adjust a few things to suit you.

Our chauffeur will pick you up at Entebbe International Airport and transfer you to Papyrus Guesthouse. A small cozy lodge in a quiet suburban neighborhood not far from the Airport.

Depending on your flight time, you can either relax back at the guesthouse or check out Entebbe’s attractions.

Entebbe has several attractions to introduce any traveler to Uganda, including the UWEC Zoo, Ngamba Chimps Island on Lake Victoria, the Botanical Gardens, Nakiwogo landing site, sand beaches, and shopping malls, and urban restaurants and bars. If you jet in the evening, we recommend you relax in the guesthouse gardens to prepare for the much-anticipated Uganda gorilla safari Adventure into the countryside.

Meals included: Dinner.
Accommodation: Papyrus Guesthouse (B&B Complimentary)

You’ll be up early and catch a one-hour domestic flight from Entebbe to Kisoro Airport at 7:30 am. Kisoro Airport is just outside Bwindi Impenetrable National Park’s south side. A driver will pick you up and transfer you to the start of your village walking experience.

We added this excursion to this Uganda gorilla safari adventure trip to give an authentic experience of walking through remote African communities and meeting different people and cultures.

The trail will take about 45 minutes between Kisoro Town and follows village footpaths through outstanding scenery with 360-degree views of cultivated mountain slopes, mountain forests, and human settlements.

Along your hike through village paths, you meet fascinating people and learn powerful knowledge of local people’s daily lives. Many children and local people will greet us as they tend their fields and livestock and collect water from local springs.

The path will take you to the edge of the gorgeous Lake Mutanda, where you’ll relax for a snack before you board the canoes. With luck, you may see otters swimming close to the shore with a massive array of colorful birdlife, including kingfishers, weaver birds, and cranes.

You continue in a northerly direction in dug-out canoes piloted by local tribesmen. The 2.5-hour canoeing journey passes quickly as the lake’s spectacular beauty and surroundings are revealed. We may see fishers checking their nets, people taking produce to market by canoe, and people cutting reeds to be used for construction.

You’ll disembark on the lakes’ northern shore at Rwanjenje and have your guide/driver transfer you to Lake Mutanda Resort, where you’ll have dinner and spend the night.

This relaxed Dutch-owned resort has luxury chalets raised on wooden platforms with lovely porches and polished wooden floorboards plonked directly on the lake in a superb location.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.
Accommodation: Mutanda Lake Resort

Spend the morning at the beautiful Mutanda lake Resort and the afternoon at Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge.

Both Mutanda Lake Resort and Nkuringo Lodge enjoy a stupendous southerly outlook! You could cross continents without finding a panorama to compare with the view across southwestern Uganda highlands towards the Virunga Mountains.

Take a swim in the bilharzia free lake, go fishing or take another short hike to Nkuringo Lodge. Either activity is sure to immerse you in the local remoteness of Uganda. You’ll be tracking the elusive mountain gorillas the next day and spending the next three nights at the stunning Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge.

Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge is entirely eco-friendly. Its design is inspired and built with natural materials locally sourced within the communities that surround the lodge. It is run by a woman owner who employs the local population to support the growth of the native population. Because the team at Nkuringo focuses on great service delivery, the lodge has won the WTA’s for the “Best Safari Lodge in Uganda” every year since 2016.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Accommodation: Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge

After an early breakfast, a guide will drive you to the trailhead for briefing before you hit the jungles to find a family of the great mountain apes.

Trekking through the jungle could take from 30 minutes to 4 hours, depending on where the mountain gorillas were last seen last evening. Make sure you are physically able to withstand the trek through uneven terrain, damp forest floors, and thick forest cover.

When you meet the gorillas, you’re allowed only 60 minutes (gorilla trekking permit $700) or 4 hours (gorilla habituation experience $1,500) with the gentle giants, and you’ll be escorted back.

Back at camp, as the night cools down, you have a roaring campfire and local songs to look forward to, as well as a deep massage, perfect for soothing any aching muscles after a day of hiking.

You’ll have another day to meet the local tribespeople, visit a single-family home, listen to their age-old tales and delve into their hidden cultures, song, and music. You’ll also have a chance to hike in the local communities that surround the lodge.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Accommodation: Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge

After a very early breakfast, drive along the Nteko Ridge to the Ivy River Trail’s junction with the forest (7 km) and then start the nature hike across the forest (13km – 4-5 hours). Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is a vast, unique natural reserve – monkeys, duikers, bush pigs, and some of Bwindi’s world-renowned bird species, plus many butterflies,s can be sighted.

If you are fortunate, you may even encounter chimpanzees! Once part of a much larger forest that included the Virunga Volcanoes in neighboring Rwanda, the park is nowadays an ecological island within a sea of villages and farmland, and its conservation importance is immense.

The emphasis of this Uganda gorilla safari adventure activity is for your walking guide to share his knowledge of the forest with you; it is not merely an A to B hike. The trail is also an essential footpath for local people, particularly on market days, traveling from Nkuringo and Nteko to Buhoma, on the park’s northern boundary. There is no road through Bwindi, so vehicles driving between the two locations have an incredible 170 km bone-jarring journey taking 6 to 8 hours.

Upon reaching Buhoma, you’ll head directly to your lodging, Mahogany Springs Lodge, facing the large swath of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. Mahogany Springs lodge enjoys incredible views across the forest canopy.

To its guests, Mahogany Springs Lodge promises privacy and serenity blended with optimal comfort in a spectacular natural setting overlooking Bwindi Impenetrable forest’s most beautiful canopy and on the banks of Muyanja river, which flows through the jungle.  The exotic gardens and intricately designed stone pathways leading to the river invite you to explore every corner of this magical place, uncovering the various surprises along the way, such as the homegrown vegetable garden.

You’ll be taking a scheduled flight from Kihihi (2.5 hours from buhoma) to Entebbe. Depending on which flight you choose, you’ll have a complimentary overnight room at Papyrus guesthouse with a free airport transfer.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
